Looking to Hire Former Service Members?

Veterans offer advice, encouragement and many benefits to employers.

Bill Ruhling, a former JAG attorney, says that leaders at all levels in the military learn to follow first and then to lead. “In this way, they learn to fit into the best aspects of an organization’s culture and work within that framework to accomplish the task effectively and efficiently.”

As many veterans enter the civilian workforce, employers often actively recruit those applicants with military experience because of the skills that they have developed as service members.  In this regard, employers need to be aware of the legal requirements related to employing or re-employing veterans.   An article addressing these issues, in which DiMuroGinsberg attorney Bill Ruhling is quoted, appears in the October 18, 2015 issue of HR Hero, published by Business & Legal Resources.  For the full article click here.

Designing a Cool Office? Don’t Forget Legal Concerns

Designing office environments to encourage innovation and collaboration among your employees has become the latest trend.

New designs for office spaces may range from bunk-bed type nooks for privacy to breakout spaces for group debate – all geared toward boosting productivity.  Yet, in designing the perfect office space to impress clients and be a fun place to work there are a number of legal issues you need to take into consideration, according to comments by DiMuroGinsberg partner, Jonathan R. Mook, in an article entitled, “Moving Toward the Latest Trend in Office Design? Don’t Forget Legal Concerns.”   The article, which appears in the October 9, 2015 edition of HR Hero Line can be found here.  http://bit.ly/1L3xtAR

ADA Accommodation Litigation

Join Jonathan Mook on November 18 for the live webinar “ADA Accommodation Litigation: Employee Requests for Telecommuting, Reassignment, Predictable Shifts and More

The EEOC recently announced its intention to strengthen enforcement of the ADA. Coupled with a greatly expanded scope of disability resulting from the ADA Amendments Act, employers face an increase in employee requests for disability-based accommodations.

Employers’ denials of requests for accommodations—such as telecommuting arrangements, predictable work shifts and reassignment—have resulted in litigation and EEOC enforcement action, and courts are increasingly ruling in favor of employees.

Jonathan joins a panel of leading employment authorities who will provide employment counsel with a review of recent court rulings arising from employers’ denial of requests for accommodation under the ADA. The panel will discuss decisions covering telecommuting, predictable work shifts, reassignments and other accommodations, and outline ways employers can minimize and defend against claims after requests for accommodation are denied.

Disabled or Not? How to Evaluate if an Employee is Qualified under the ADA

Now that the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA) is in effect, it is much easier for an individual to demonstrate that his or her medical condition rises to the level of a covered disability. The question now will be: Is the person qualified? Jonathan Mook answers your questions in brief here.

Join Mr. Mook at the Advanced Employment Issues Symposium in Las Vegas in November to get these and all your questions answered. Register for the conference here.
